Cross-Modal Semantic Priming
نویسنده
چکیده
The cross-modal semantic priming paradigm is described, including its underlying rationale and the different tasks with which it is combined. The major characteristics of the paradigm—the type of stimuli used, the dependent and independent variables typically manipulated—are then introduced. Also, its main advantages and drawbacks are discussed. Finally, the most important areas of application are considered and some important ndings which have been obtained with it are briey mentioned.

On measuring multiple lexical activation using the cross-modal semantic priming technique
Cross-modal semantic priming with partial auditory primes seems a good technique to assess spoken-word recognition, because it allows tracking the activation of multiple word candidates. However, previous research using this technique has found inconsistent results. First, a priming experiment is reported that addresses this technique’s validity. Results show that semantic priming is not observ...
متن کاملGraded lexical activation by pseudowords in cross-modal semantic priming:Spreading of activation, backward priming, or repair?
Spoken word recognition models treat mismatching sensory information differently. Mismatching information deactivates lexical entries according to one type of models. In another type of models, lexical entries are activated reflecting their degree of match with the input. This issue is mainly investigated with cross-modal semantic priming and lexical decision. This paradigm has been suspected o...
متن کاملMorphological priming: dissociation of phonological, semantic, and morphological factors.
Previous experiments based on a masked-priming paradigm revealed robust morphological priming effects induced by two derivational morphemes in Hebrew: the root and the verbal pattern. However, considering the special characteristics of the masked-priming paradigm, the possible contributions of phonological and/or semantic factors to these morphological effects could not be firmly assessed. In t...

Standard views of morphology in Modern Standard Arabic hold that surface word forms comprise at least two morphemes: a three-consonantal root conveying semantic meaning and a word pattern carrying syntactic information. An alternative account claims that semantic information is carried by a bi-consonantal morphological unit called the etymon. Accordingly, in the form [batara] the core meaning i...
متن کاملThe Sensory-Dependent Nature of Audio-Visual Interactions for Semantic Knowledge
The nature of audio-visual interactions is poorly understood for meaningful objects. These interactions would be indirect through semantic memory according to the amodal nature of knowledge, whereas these interactions would be direct according to the modal nature of knowledge. This question, central for both memory and multisensory frameworks, was assessed using a cross-modal priming paradigm f...
